Cannabis sativa is an annual herbaceous plant which has been cultivated globally andthroughout history, both legally for fibre and seeds and illegally for use as a recreational drug. Native to Central Asia and widely naturalised in other parts of theworld.
Traditional use - Seeds
Seeds are chiefly used to make hemp seed oil which is used for a wide range of uses including cooking and bird feed. Medicinally, the seeds are used in Chinese medicine as a strong and effective laxative. Hemp seed oil is used as an emollient due to its
moisturising properties.
Folklore – In Norwegian folklore, hemp cloth symbolized the beginning and end. It was the first as well as the last in which people were swathed in, during a lifetime.
The seed oil and extracts are widely used in cosmetic products to moisturise and nourish the skin.
Key constituents
Cannabis sativa contains cannabinoids, flavonoids, volatile oils and alkaloids. Seeds contain high levels of oil (essential fatty acids) and protein. Also, calcium, iron,
phosphorous, magnesium, zinc, copper and manganese.
